James Cao for Load

James Cao's oeuvre focuses on the intersection of traditional art techniques and the latest technological advancements, transforming these combinations into collectable experiences for the audience. This theme is vividly showcased in the exhibition at Load, where Cao highlights a range of new media art practices. 

Cao employed a variety of cutting-edge technologies and real-time graphic tools such as TouchDesigner, Unreal Engine, and Unity to create these pieces. Techniques included Particle Instancing, GLSL shader programming, Photogrammetry, Drone photography, and AI dataset training and generation. His creative process typically begins with an inspiration sparked by new technological possibilities. From there, he continuously seeks the right balance between the object or topic he wishes to explore and the new techniques he is incorporating. This iterative process ensures that the final artwork resonates with both the traditional and contemporary elements he aims to merge.

The goal for this exhibition is to ignite public interest in the practical applications of digital and new media art. Cao seeks to inspire visitors with the possibilities presented and to make them see beyond the abstract directions his works take, envisioning the vast potential of digital art in everyday life. He aims to evoke a sense of calm, contentment, and joy, allowing to experience the beauty and innovation of new media art in a way that feels both accessible and enriching. Incorporating insights and experiences from his previous works and exhibitions, Cao aims to create a cohesive and impactful presentation that not only showcases the technological marvels of new media art but also touches the hearts and minds of viewers, encouraging meaningful engagement with art.

Seasonal Proximities is an immersive new media art installation created by Cao Yuxi Studio in 2021. It started with an Yuxi’s obsession over impressionism in the digital concept area. He thinks that humans, as constantly evolving creatures, have entered the uncharted area where the main visual scope is pixel-based. Each object comes with a mutated digital version, imprinted in and by our mind. Yuxi defines this shifting perception of the real or natural world is a new impressionism concept. He creates dynamic paintings that can prompt his audience to re-consider this new digital art world paradigm we are living in.

Utilising drone footage as a source emitter for a particle rendering system, this work is a tribute to nature's supremacy over even the most advanced human-made technology.
