Dambe serves as a visual threshold into the exhibition. The work evokes the cultural aesthetics of West African martial arts while simultaneously constructing a dreamlike, speculative space where the figures meet in both tenderness and aggression. This duality gestures towards the complex relationship among the Orisa, deities who often embody contradictions, shifting between protection and destruction, intimacy and provocation. The suspended encounter between the two figures becomes less of a “fight” and more of an unfolding cosmology, a choreography of forces negotiating power, vulnerability, memory and ode. Here, conflict and care remain in perpetual relation.

Hold Space for me, 2022

Hold Space for Me engages the Afro-metaphysical understanding that time is not linear but cyclical, recursive and profoundly relational. The body becomes a porous threshold, part landscape, part vessel, part echo, collapsing temporal distance into a single unfolding plane. The carved out negative spaces in the main figure’s back operate almost like temporal apertures: through them, silhouettes from different moments in time coexist, observing one another, becoming one another as past, present, and future continually leak into one another. The boundary, then, is not fixed but permeable.

Seeker, 2024

Seeker draws from a Tiv understanding of Aondo, the supreme God, as a distant rather than intervening presence. Aondo gives life, but what we do with it, what we pursue, transform, summon or become, is left to us. Centred around a Tiv masquerade in motion and recursive figures that continually return to themselves, the work considers seeking as both an outward and inward journey. In a world alive with forces, relationships, ancestors and possibilities, Seeker asks what it means to alchemise what is already present in our earthly existence in pursuit of our desires. Ultimately, the work turns the search for the divine inward, proposing that perhaps what we are seeking is the generative power already contained within the self: the god within..

Lover’s Moon II, 2023

Lover’s Moon II is a romantic cosmology, an imaginary merging of celestial imagery with earthy textures that stages the moon as both witness and participant in human tenderness. The work performs the quiet, poetic work of cosmic alignment when desires align with celestial rhythms. It operates with both spiritual and sensual registers, presenting the moon and its cycles as an archive of tenderness between beings. Love becomes a ritual of timekeeping as both a lover stores stories. In this way, the lover and the moon are archivists.

In Time is a series of works that explores the belief that we must look back to inform the future. The works render time as cyclical and even disorienting, refusing linear progression in favour of temporal loops, returns and reconfiguration. Each piece proposes that futures emerge only through a deep engagement with what has come before, through ancestral memory and inherited knowledge. The divine feminine appears here as a carrier of these inheritances, the epitome of wisdom carried through generations, reshaped and projected into new speculative worlds.

Sound of a Bloom, 2025

This work, the newest in this selection, leans into the metaphor of blooming as emergence, rebirth and cross-temporal unfolding. Similar to Hold Space for Me, past, present and future selves are seen in synchronicity, where Hold Space for Me is self-reflective, the figures in this piece inch upwards as if reaching towards the divine. Transformation echoes through this piece as to bloom is to die and to die is to return folded back into the cycle, the dreamscape of time.
