What Was Lost Between Worlds

A la cosmología ioruba, l’Egúngún és més que una disfressa; és un arxiu viu a on tela, gest, ritme i alè ancestral conformen un sistema de coneixement codificat. Quan les condicions que sostenen aquest sistema canvien – ja sigui per processos de migració, supressió o desconnexió cultural – l’arxiu comença a distendre’s. 


What Was Lost Between Worlds reflecteix aquest moment de ruptura. En un bosc sagrat il·luminat per l’alba, un Egúngún apareix amb tota la seva força encarnada. Progressivament, emergeix un traç espectral d’arquitectura colonial y la figura comença a dissoldre’s en símbols i partícules de llum. Patrons Adire, marques binàries Ifá i unitats de dades abstractes es remolinen a l’aire, suspesos, gairebé indecisos entre la desaparició i la permanència.


L’obra llança una pregunta: quan el coneixement encarnat és extret de les seves terres, desapareix o es transforma en un altre mode de ser i existir?

At the Osun Grove, the masquerade spins uncontrollably until it unravels, sending out a shockwave that destroys the sacred site. The work reflects on rupture, loss and the fragility of spiritual space.

The Last Toll, 2026

Detalls

Set on the Black River in Benin, a Zangbeto masquerade figure spins with increasing force until its body begins to come apart. What remains is a single brass bell (agogo in Yoruba) synonymous with Yoruba culture, known for its calling into the spirit realm. The work considers what survives when ritual, memory and material culture are separated from one another.
