John Baloy

“I often use my own experiences and emotions as a muse, delving into the complexities of my mind to create narratives that are raw, honest, and deeply personal. At its core, my work revolves around the theme of coming of age, grappling with the challenges of identity, belonging, and self-discovery in a society grappling with its own complexities.”

John Baloy is a Johannesburg-based photographer and visual artist whose practice centres on the lived experiences of Black people, approached through a surreal, Afrocentric visual language. He seeks to portray people of colour as living works of art, reframing dominant narratives and inviting subjects to see themselves with dignity, pride, and reverence. His imagery offers alternative perspectives that encourage self-reflection, empowerment, and an expanded understanding of contemporary Black identity.

Largely self-taught, Baloy began his career as a graphic designer before working as an Automotive Electrician in the mining industry for four years. In 2013, influenced by Instagram accounts such as Iseeadifferentyou, Rog Walker, Street Etiquette, and Andile Buka, he developed a deep interest in photography and acquired his first camera. In 2017, he left his job to pursue photography full-time. Since then, Baloy has collaborated with brands including Bombay Sapphire, Adobe, Adidas, Markham, Mr Price, and Bisquit Cognac.
