"The beauty and complexity of the natural world have always captivated me, from the movement of waves to the interplay of light and colour at sunset. These phenomena inform my creative process as I explore the interaction of light, colour, and form through generative animated visuals created with code. Through a daily practice of exploration and iteration, I hope to create pieces that provide a meditative space for the viewer and bring a sense of wonder and healing."

  1. Jason Ting is an American new media artist and creative coder renowned for his abstract animated visuals that explore the interaction of form, colour, and motion.

  2. After completing an interdisciplinary computing arts programme, Ting worked as a software engineer for over a decade, specialising in web and mobile frontend development. In 2020, he rekindled his passion for creativity and immersed himself in creative coding.

  3. Ting began learning about generative art through the work and teachings of Matt DesLauriers and Zach Lieberman. Since then, he has maintained a daily practice of creating and sharing a digital "sketch."

  4. The artist is inspired by the work of James Turrell and Dan Flavin with light, the interactive and immersive creations of TeamLab, and pioneers of computer-based art such as Vera Molnár and John Whitney. His Lumina light sculpture, shown in the Saint George Hall in Marfa, Texas, is a nod to Turrell, but with a performative element–meant as an experience for two, it facilitates connection with both the art and another person.

  5. For his first public art showcase, Jason Ting completed a video projection installation in downtown New Haven, created in memory of Breonna Taylor and expressing grief over the justice denied after the 2020 grand jury trial failed to hold officers accountable for her death.
